Innovation and development
Dreaming and creating, inventiveness and innovation. These are the factors providing the impetus behind Octatube’s development of novel components, products and systems. All departments within Octatube are involved: new products go from the designers to the fabricators and back again, then to production for a prototype, and back again for design modifications. The process continues until all the wishes and requirements in the design brief are met. The development of a new component, product or system often calls for fundamental technical research, which can be highly demanding in terms of both time and energy input. The high financial demands mean that such an approach is uncommon in the construction sector, but we have found it essential in maintaining the level of innovation and quality we require.
Like no other Octatube can meet the demands for a new or adapted product or system. Any project can be the justification for a (new) special product or system. It is an option for the architect to incorporate project-specific requirements into a standard Octatube system product. So Octatube experiments and innovates a lot compared to most design & build companies. The majority of our portfolio however is made up by routine projects. It makes it possible for Octatube to invest, develop and innovate on a secure base.
Novel design concepts, innovative leaps and crisp decision-making are the result of the tight collaborative arrangements and the constant dialogue between the architectural, structural and industrial designers at Octatube. A multidisciplinary approach to design has proved to be an essential element of Octatube’s success in delivering new designs.
Octatube’s product designers are responsible for the integration of spatial structures within the Architect’s design. The overall concept for the building, the details and the connections to other structural elements all need to be addressed. Continual dialogue with the Project Architect is therefore more the rule than the exception, with the architect’s wishes in central place. We have also learned that the earlier in the process the contact between architect and product designers takes place, the better the outcome. Logically the architectonic components have a major impact on the architectural quality of the project.
The most important task of the Structural Designer is to translate the design concept into an inspiring, workable and structurally sound plan. This sets out how external loads are transferred to the supporting structures or foundations, and what structural loads and reactive forces are anticipated. Choices made in this structural plan also flow from the architectonic concept. Far more than is usual in our industry, Octatube has always concentrated on the creation of slender, elegantly formed structures.
The primary aim of industrial design relates to the manufacturability: the optimization of the production of components, assembly and installation plays a significant role in the design process.
Bringing design, engineering, production and installation together by means of the so-called “Design & Build” concept results in a single responsible and approachable partner: Octatube. Engineering is a crucial aspect of architecture. All problems which come up during manufacturing and construction need to be resolved. For the diverse groups of designers within Octatube, the presence of the production facilities brings them into close contact with their raw materials, the numerous processing techniques available and the resulting products. This contact provides an endless source of inspiration and brings together the two worlds of theory and practice. The installation department is always able to share its’ thoughts and experiences with the designers, their ideas can then be incorporated in subsequent design projects.In this way the practical construction process provides a continual impetus to innovation.
