Over the last 35 years, our work has integrated design, engineering, production and installation of complex architectural structures. Our focus lies on high quality, specialized and innovative building components.
We have always aimed to build for longevity. Whether it’s an old building that is renovated and thus given a new lease of life, or a new building started from scratch. We try to prefabricate as much as possible, limit our stay on site and minimize material use without compromising on quality.
By founding Octatube Services we offer specialized know-how with regards to repair and maintenance – ensuring that a building receives the right aftercare, extending its lifespan.
Still, when it comes to sustainability, there are many hurdles to overcome. We strive to keep on learning and do better, for our people and our planet.
In the beginning of 2020 we asked ourselves: what is our impact as a company? Can we make it measurable? We decided to apply to be certified by the international organization B Corporation, with the support of the B Corp track of the Entrepeneurs’ Organization.
About B Corp
B Corp is a certification that looks at a company’s impact on all its stakeholders: employees, suppliers, clients, community and the environment. To comply, companies voluntarily pursue the highest verified standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability.
We completed the B-Impact Assessment in order to certify. This is an extensive step in which we were challenged to take a close look at our internal processes and policies. At the end of the B-Impact Assessment we ended up with a score of 99.1 out of 200, where the industry average is 50 points. You can view our score here.
Over the past months the Assessment already challenged us to make a lot of changes. We amended our statutes, and with that our business DNA: stating that we want to use our business operations and activities to have a significant positive impact on society and the environment.
Employee code of conduct
We reviewed and redeveloped our Employee Code of Conduct. This document not only covers basic behavioral guidelines or HR processes, but also expresses our internal values when it comes to the wellness and happiness of our teams. It governs our work environment. As we are in the middle of a transition to a horizontal organization using Holacracy, this document serves a double purpose: it’s a great document to fall back on in the process.
Our Procurement team has set up a Code of Conduct which we shared with our suppliers. From now on, suppliers are not only judged by quality and price of their products, but also on the steps they take towards a more sustainable living environment.
Why B Corp?
We decided to apply to become a B Corp as this is an independent certification. Besides that, we value B Corp’s holistic approach: you’re challenged to review your practices in different areas – ranging from your suppliers to your employees to the environment. It is not merely a check-in-the-box exercise, but an active stimulus to keep on making a difference when it comes to these subjects. That’s why receiving the B Corp certification is not the end-of-the-line: in fact, it is just the beginning.
In addition, we join a community of B Corporations – allowing us to become an active part of an impactful movement. We can learn from others and share knowledge, increasing our positive impact together.
So, what’s next?
Our aim is to apply the B Corp certification as a guideline for impactful entrepreneurship and social innovation. We’re forming an internal team to see to this. Currently, we are also looking into the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) of the United Nations. It is our intention to lay out and prioritize a path that will help us comply to these SDG’s.
We’re excited about this first step towards a more sustainable future.
